Jiangxi borders Anhui to the north, Zhejiang to the northeast, Fujian to the east, Guangdong to the south, Hunan to the west, and Hubei to the northwest. It is a southern province of the People's Republic of China, spanning from the banks of the Yangtze River in the north into hillier areas in the south.

The Gan River dominates the province, flowing through the entire length of the province from south to north. It enters Lake Poyang in the north, the largest freshwater lake of China; that lake in turn empties into the Yangtze River, which forms part of the northern border of Jiangxi. Poyang Lake is Poyanghu in Chinese. It covers an area of 5000 more square kilometers. In winter time, When the water cover shrinks to 3000 less square kilometers. Most of the areas become grass land, with abundant waterweeds, It attracts thousands of migratory birds from Siberia come here to spend their winter time, including those species endangered or near extinction, such as the rare Scaly-sided Merganser, Black Stork, Oriental White Stork, Siberian Crane(White crane) and so on, Thus, the lake becomes the most popular destination for those bird watchers and bird researchers both from home and abroad. There are hundreds of birders from all over the world every year.

Wuyuan has long been regarded as ¡°the most beautiful countryside in China¡±. It attracts thousands of tourists come for a visit every year. Though, to most of the tourists who come to visit Wuyuan may only to see landscapes, countryside views and villages, few people know this place as an amazing place for birdwatching. There are approximately 370 birds species around this region, among which, you may surprise find the world wide almost extinct ¡°Blue-crowned Laughingthrush¡±, which is separated from ¡°Yellow-throated Laughingthrush¡±. It is believed by Dr. He Fenqi (The Yellow-throated Laughingthrush Researcher) and other bird experts that the present existed numbers are only 200 approximately and only can be seen in Wuyuan. In the past people also found the species in Simao of Yunnan province and Assam of India.

Birds Possible: 60-80 species

Highlight birds: Siberian Crane, White-naped Crane, Oriental Stork, Lesser White-fronted Goose, Scaly-sided Merganser, Pied Falconet, Short-tailed Parrotbill, Elliot's Pheasant, Sliver Pheasant and Chinese Bamboo Partridge.

Day 1 Arrive in Nanchang   Dinner

Arrive in Nanchang, the capital city of Jiangxi province, meet with your bird watching guide and driver. When every customer reaches, and then we will drive towards Wuyuan(3.5 hours), a picturesque small town in the northeast of the province with a forest coverage of 80% of the total area and without many polluted industries. Wuyuan is the optimal inhabitants of many kinds of birds, there are approximately 370 bird species. This small remote county is known as one of the best birding destination in southeastern China. 3 nights in 3* Tianma Hotel or similar.

 

 

Day 2 Wuyuan   Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Explore to many different villages where the forests or wooden land nearby, birds here are Grey-headed Parrotbill, Chestnut Bulbul, Collared Finchbill, Hwamei, Black-throated Tit, Sliver Pheasant, Then drive to see the beautiful Scaly-sided Mergansers (Global vulnerable). the habitat for merganser is only 3 kilometers far away from a village along the Le' An river, this spot is proved a very reliable one for mergansers,we constantly seen them in recent years since 2008,though the total number is not many( 22, in 2008; 20,in 2009; 19, in 2010; 20, in 2011; 17, in 2012,16,in 2013).you may also see Short-tailed Parrotbill (Global vulnerable),other birds:Chinese Bamboo Partridge,Grey-capped Woodpecker, Pied and Common Kingfisher,White-Crowned Forktail and Gray-chinned Minivet etc.

 

 

Day 3 Wuyuan   Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Continuing your Bird watching trip in Wuyuan. Exploring to a village nearby Wu river, you may see Great spotted, Grey-headed, Gray-capped pygmy Woodpeckers, Eurasian Jay, Yellow-billed Grosbeak , Japanese Waxwing (8 been seen in 2013), Vinous-throated Parrotbill and Mandarin ducks,etc. Then move to another village in the northeast Wuyuan for Pied Falconet (Global near threatened), you may also see little forktail, Asian-barred Owlet and Plumbeous Water Redstart.

 

 

Day 4 Wuyuan to Wucheng & Poyanghu   Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, drive to Wucheng town(4.5 hours), which is a small remote island town in the west area of Poyang lake, the town is known as the hometown of cranes, where you will see 4 cranes (Siberian, White-naped, Hooded and Common).The government built up the Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve there to protect the beautiful creatures. Siberian Crane(Global endangered) is undoubtedly the reserve's star attraction, over 95% of the world population (the global population is estimated 3000 more)winter here, as do even larger numbers of the equally majestic White-naped Crane(Global vulnerable) and Hooded Crane, Oriental Storks(Global vulnerable). Besides, Large flocks of geese include Swan, Bean, Greater and lesser White-fronted (Global vulnerable). Large flocks of Eurasian Spoonbills, Bewick's Swans,and numbers of Spotted Redshanks along with many other waders. 2 nights in Yongxiu Hotel or similar.

 

 

Day 5 Wucheng & Poyanghu   Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we will change your ride to boat, take a fishing boat and exploring to several satellite lakes for Siberian Crane, Hooded and White-naped Crane, Oriental Stork, Tundra and Whooper Swans (Small number), Eurasian Spoonbills, Swan Geese, Bean Geese, Greater and Lesser White-fronted Geese and Greylag. And you may also see Falcated duck, Baikal teal, Northern Pintail, the rare Baer's Pochar (Critically endangered), Pied Avocet, Spotted Redshank and Japanese Quail. Our guide will prepare picnic luch , and you will spend all day long around the Nature Reserve.

 

Day 6 Departure   Breakfast, Lunch

After a final morning in Poyang lake (Flexible itinerary for this morning depends on your flight/train), we'll return to Nanchang city. Then the tour is ended. Welcome back any time.

 

The rate is USD880 per person

Price included:

1.   5 nights' accommodation as mentioned in the schedule. Two people share a twin room. If you'd like have a private room without other one, you should pay single supplement fee USD200 per person.

2.   English speaking birding guide.

6.  Boat fee in Poyanghu.
